99 Days of Laney MacGuire by Rachel Bateman

Title: 99 Days of Laney MacGuire

Author: Rachel Bateman

Publication Date: November 14, 2013

Summary:

Laney can’t wait to spend the summer at her father’s lake resort. It’s a place where time stands still and nothing ever changes – the perfect thing for Laney after the year she just had. But when she gets there, she discovers the lodge isn’t quite as unchanging as she once thought.

Some of the differences are good, like Rory’s new look; some are bad, like whatever secret Karissa is keeping. And then some things are just confusing, like Weston.

Weston, her mysterious new co-worker, who is the cause of so many of the changes Laney hates. She wants to despise him, but she can’t deny the attraction she feels, nor the desire she has to be around the one person who didn’t know her before the summer - the one person she doesn’t have to pretend for.

Excerpt:

Weston rubbed his hands on his pants and jumped off the log. “Okay. You need to cheer up. I hereby declare we aren’t leaving this beach until you find me ten clams.”
“What?” He couldn’t be serious.
“You were the one bragging about how many clams are out here. Prove it.” The challenge was clear in his smile.
I kicked off my shoes. “Fine. You’re on.” I rolled my pant legs to my knees and stepped into the cool water, relishing the feel of the wet sand pressing between my toes. This was where I belonged; I could spend days standing in the water like this.
Seven clams later, the wind picked up. My hair blew around my face—why did I grow it long again?—and stuck to my lip gloss. My hands were totally covered with mud. After a few attempts at brushing the hair away with my shoulder, I admitted defeat and turned back to Weston. “A little help here?”
His shoes were already off, and he was rolling his pants up. He waded out to me, not stopping until he was much closer than necessary. Heat pulsed from his body, slamming into me with full force. He swept the hair from my face, his thumb tracing my cheekbone to my ear. My lips were happily hair free, but he didn’t take his hand back. His eyes locked on mine, a familiar look of hunger brewing within them, and he cupped his hand around the back of my neck.
A flame flared in my stomach, licking at the bottom of my ribs and then traveling lower. Despite the heat tearing through my insides, my whole body buzzed with goose bumps. Could he feel it, too?
Weston lowered his head to mine. We stood there, forehead to forehead, for almost longer than I could stand. Each breath he took caressed my skin, and my body screamed for him. I lifted my head to finally take the kiss I needed so badly.
Our lips brushed, barely meeting—
And then it was over. His hand left my neck; I couldn’t feel him near me at all. I opened my eyes to find him backing away from me.
“I...we better get back. You’re going to miss your lunch date.”
